Product Information
The president of High Sierra Antennas has been licensed and active since 1963. His original callsign was WN6JZC as a novice and then WB6JZC as a General Class licensee in 1964. Licensed at about the same time was Jerry Leary, WN6IVF and later, WB6IVF. Jim and Jerry used to talk on 15 meter AM phone in the 1960's. Sometimes they would chase DX together. Jerry's enthusiasm and friendly nature made him a well known personality on the ham bands. He was an active Scout and won a state championship in signalling with flags. That's an amazing feat because Jerry has been blind since birth.
During high school and college, Jim worked at two electronic stores in Burbank (Hagerty Radio Supply and Electronic City), California not far from Jerry's home in the San Fernando Valley. Jerry and his father were often customers of Jim at those stores. Jerry would feel products and quickly figure out how to use them. About that time, Jim and Jerry had an 8 hour marathon QSO for the Real Ragchewers Award from 73 Magazine. They talked through lunch and dinner using Johnson AM transmitters on 15 meters.
Decades go by; Jim and Jerry lose contact. Then a few years ago, Jerry ordered a High Sierra 1800/Pro. While processing orders, Jim saw a callsign he would never forget; WB6IVF. Jim called Jerry immediately and they renewed their friendship.
Jerry, with his guide dog, flew to Dayton, Ohio to meet Jim at the Hamvention in 2004. Jim did not know that Jerry was going to be there and was very surprised to see Jerry feeling his way around the very busy Hamvention. It brought back memories of Jerry and his father shopping for electronic parts decade before.
Over the last 30+ years, Jerry had built a geodesic dome in Northern California and later moved to Boulder, Colorado. Jerry operated an automotive repair business for many years. Jerry's reputation for fixing vehicles grew and he had a loyal following. However, Jerry's passion for coffee utimately lead him from repairing vehicles to roasting coffee beans. Many people told Jerry that a blind man could not possibly do it right. Jerry proved them wrong. He became a master roaster not by watching the bean but by smelling them and feeling them. Simply put, Jerry nose when the beans are perfectly roasted.
In 2006, our office start buying coffee from Jerry and his website www.theunseenbean.com. Jim and Jerry developed some special mixes of coffee beans designed specially for ham radio operators. We urge you to try Jerry's blind roasted coffee. Without question, it is the best coffee you will ever drink.
